RedMoSI is a cloud-based program developed by IBP to allow MoSI station operators to import, verify, and edit bird banding data. Operators can also download Excel files of the cleaned data for their records. For those that it applied so, they can also formatted files that can be imported into the United States and Canadian Banding Offices' Bander Portal. RedMoSI was introduced during the 2025-26 MoSI season but contains all past years of MoSI data.
RedMoSI will eventually allow the download of all the MoSI data for use in analyses. This will require that the downloader indicate their intended use of the data and agree to credit the operators that collected and submitted the data. This feature is still under development.
RedMoSI utilizes look-up tables from the Second Edition of Peter Pyle's Identification Guide to North American Birds, Part 1. Information from species not included in this guide, many endemic, are also being entered based upon data in Birds of the World, published papers, and operator knowledge. If you note any inconsistencies, please reach out to Danielle Kaschube

Where to find RedMoSI

RedMoSI can be found on the RedMoSI website. Operators will need a password that is associated with their email and station(s) before they can log in. For now, they must request that password from Danielle Kaschube

Links for entering data into an Excel or Google Sheets

The banding and effort data are pulled into RedMoSI simultaneously, and the files must be in the correct structure or they will not upload. We have provided the data entry templates in two platforms, so you can choose Excel or Google Sheets. These templates should be used to ensure the correct structure and headers so the files will import properly into RedMoSI. After data entry is complete for either platform, you will need to save each of the two data types as comma-separated (CSV) files for import into RedMoSI. Notes and instructions on data entry can be found here: MoSIData entry instructions.
You can download:
The Excel data entry template here: RedMoSI Excel data entry template.
The Google Sheets version here: RedMoSI Google Sheets data entry template. To use the Google template, you will need to "Make a copy" from the "File" menu before you can begin data entry. To create the CSV files from the Google template, choose "File" -> "Download" -> "Comma Separated Values (.csv)"
Examples of the filled templates in both platforms can be found at: Excel or Google Sheets.

Processing data in RedMoSI

The workflow instructions can be found at the link below. We are trying to keep the instructions simple and have the workflow explained in the app itself, but if you have questions or need clarification, please reach out. Data processing instructions.

The instructions on how to work through RedMoSI can be found in the RedMoSI Workflow document.
RedMoSI is still a new system, so there may be things that you need help with. Please reach out, and we'll get you back on track. We have the same access to your data that you do, so if need be, we can make changes, and we might need to have the developer make adjustments too. Please let us know what you like, what you don't like, so we can make adjustments where we can.
Basically, the "errors" marked in red need something to be changed so the conflict is removed, and the "warnings" in yellow should be looked at to see if they can be addressed. Both kinds of issues should be avoided in future seasons.
