Materials
for Managers and GIS Specialists
Here we provide selected materials
intended for land managers and GIS support specialists. These materials
provide the background material for this project and GIS software
tools for implementing demographic monitoring, modeling, and management
of landbird populations. This project is documented in:
Managing Landbird Populations in Forests of the Pacific
Northwest Region Download Full
Report (5.3mB) or Executive
Summary (412KB).
Species Management Accounts:
These accounts provide management information concerning
each of 13 species of conservation concern that are focal species
across the USFS Region Six MAPS demographic monitoring network. Each
account (clickable as available) also provides a brief assessment
of the species' sensitivity to climate change.
- Hammond's Flycatcher (Empidonax hammondii)
- "Western Flycatcher (Empidonax difficilis/occidentalis)
- Warbling Vireo (Vireo
gilvus)
- Swainson's
Thrush (Empidonax virescens)
- MacGillivray's Warbler (Catharus ustulatus)
- Wilson's Warbler (Wilsonia
pulsilla )
- Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerina)
- Lincoln's Sparrow (Melospiza
lincolnii)
- Chestnut-backed Chickadee (Poecile rufescens)
- Winter Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes)
- Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia)
- Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hymenalis)
- Pine Siskin (Carduelis pinus)
Presentation Materials:
Fact Sheets, PowerPoint presentations and other materials that summarize
the project and report some results.
Decision-support Tools: Tools
for managers and GIS support specialists to assess the impact of proposed
management upon landbird populations. These include instructions for
predicting the effects of management on landbird populations, ArcView
GIS scripts for spatial analysis using FragStats, and pre-programmed
Excel spreadsheets for pre- and post-management prediction of multiple-species
demographics. To apply these tools download and read:
Reference Documents: Documents that
reference the use of demographic monitoring techniques (including
MAPS) in forested land management.
