IBP Publications

The Institute for Bird Population (see Annual report) publishes scientific papers in peer-reveiwed books and journals (including our own journal, Bird Populations). In addition, we produce reports for public land managers that summarize our banding efforts, provide estimates and indices of avian demographic parameters, and document the influence of landscape, climate, and weather on avian demographic parameters.

Publications are grouped according to the following categories:

• The MAPS Program - Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship throughout N. America at more than 500 banding stations.
• IBP's Sierra Nevada Bird Observatory - efforts to study, monitor, and conserve bird populations in California's Sierra Nevada mountain range.
• Avian Inventory Program - collecting baseline information on avian diversity, distribution, and abundance on public lands.
• The MoSI and MAWS programs - Networks of mist-netting stations operated during the non-breeding season to identify and understand winter habitat quality for landbirds.
• Tropical MAPS (TMAPS) - Monitoring vital rates of resident tropical birds.
• Burrowing Owl Project - providing a scientific basis for the development of a conservation strategy for this species that is declining in California.
• Bird Populations Journal - a peer-reviewed annual journal of global avian research.
• Pyle Identification Guides - Parts I & II available from Slate Creek Press.
• Species Alpha Codes - Four- and six-letter codes for North American birds.
