Materials for Managers

Here you will find text, tables, and figures that provide an overview of the project development, important findings, and materials relevant to landbird conservation. The materials will include PowerPoint presentations, fact sheets, and case studies exemplifying the use of decision support tools provided by the project.

Species Management Accounts:

Management guideline fact sheets are available (or under development) for eight species of conservation concern as listed by the Partners in Flight organization and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. These accounts provide management information concerning each of eight species of conservation concern that are focal species across the DoD-MAPS demographic monitoring network. Each account also provides a brief assessment of the species' sensitivity to climate change.

Recent Reports of Interest:

Comparing and Contrasting Installation-specific Demographics with Regional Demographics and Landscape Characteristics (PDF) - this report emphasizes the importance of DoD lands in providing regionally important interior forest in which populations of forest birds of conservation concern successfully breed.

Presentation Materials: Fact Sheets, PowerPoint presentations and other materials that summarize the project and report some results.

PowerPoint slides:

  • Estimates of DoD-MAPS network-wide survival rate for 32 species (slide).

Why use demographic monitoring techniques? (PDF)

Decision-support Tools: Tools for managers and GIS support specialists to assess the impact of proposed management upon landbird populations. These include instructions for predicting the effects of management on landbird populations, ArcView GIS scripts for spatial analysis using FragStats, and pre-programmed Excel spreadsheets for pre- and post-management prediction of multiple-species demographics. To apply these tools download and read:
"How-to Notes for Managers and GIS Specialists" (.doc format).

Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet for predicting pre-management and post-management demographics.

ESRI ArcView scripts for FRAGSTATS (U. Mass.) batch analysis of "cookie-cuts" of land cover (or other) raster data provided in Bird and Spatial Datasets. - under construction.

Reference Documents: Documents that reference the use of demographic monitoring techniques (including MAPS) in forested land management.
