Landbirds of Conservation Concern

A number of prioritized lists of birds of conservation concern have been published in conservation plans for breeding birds of North America including those provided by the DoD Partners in Flight.

The DoD-MAPS network monitoring and research focuses on a suite of ten birds of conservation and management concern. An executive report from provided The Institute for Bird Populations in 2003 summarized the managment approach for these species.

Many plans fall under the umbrella of the The U.S. North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI) Committee and can be downloaded from their website: http://www.nabci-us.org/main2.html

The Partners in Flight North American Landbird Conservation Plan provides lists of species of concern by NABCI Bird Conservation Region http://www.partnersinflight.org/cont_plan/ but these, and other lists, can be obtained through a NABCI resource http://www.nabci-us.org/map.html by clicking on a map of BCR regions.

These lists can help identify target species of concern for a given installation. Approximately 15 such species have been identified in the DoD MAPS dataset. IBP constructed management models for the 10 eastern species listed below.
