Additional information (Información adicional): I just returned from 3 months in Panama where mist-netting and banding were part of an effort to capture and radio-tag three species of resident tropical songbirds. I am planning to tracel around central and south america in May and June before returning to panama hopefully in July, and if I can volunteer somewhere during my travels, that would be fantastic. I'd like to get more banding experience, and contribute to these important missions. I have a Master's in Wildlife Science, and many years experience as a field biologist. I speak some basic Spanish, and am taking classes to learn more. It would be great to have housing while on-site. Thanks!

Last summer, I worked in Alert for the project ArcticWOLVES (International Polar Year). We captured birds (shorebird and jaeger) with rocket net and then we banded, measured and took blood samples on them. In 2004, I traveled to Guatemala and worked three weeks with FUNDAECO, a foundation who follows bird’s community in Reserva ecologica Cerro San Gil. We did a lot of mist net and we captured a lot of passerines. I really appreciate this way of travelling because we can meet local people and it’s a good way to learn more about the country and to improve my Spanish. My spanish is not so bad. I plan on travelling and birding in Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua and it would be nice to work at any banding station.

Additional information (Información adicional): I have banded birds on Colombia and I have been working with migratory birds in Peru (marine birds and some land birds) for two years, most of these birds come from North America or Caribbean so I want to create a station to monitoring these birds here in Peru but I need first to know the best way to do it. I recently have finished the university and my monetary situation is not the best at this moments, so I dont know if it would be possible if the station operator could provide housing and food and maybe some transport costs. I am right now on Peruvians jungle so the best means to contacting me is by e-mail in spanish or in english.

Additional information (Información adicional): We would like to take this opportunity to announce a proposed ecotour/fundraising experince, in Nicaragua. EcoQuest Travel is offering an opportunity to meet and partner with local biologists in the central highlands as they band neo-tropical migrants wintering in the Matagalpa Mountains. We will be assisting in setting up what we hope will become a permanent MOSI banding station at the Finca Esperanza Verde, a Shade-Grown coffee farm/ ecotour destination near San Ramon, Nicaragua. Based on several previous tours, we can say that the Finca is a ‘birdy’ place. This lodge also recently won the Smithsonian Magazine sustainable tourism award…www.sanramonecolodge.org.
In addition to three days of banding, we will travel to other good birding sites in the region and across the Pacific slope including: Selva Negra, where we expect to see Three-wattled Bellbirds and possibly Resplendant Quetzals, and dry tropical forest near Granada, a colonial city on the shores of Lake Nicaragua.
It is not essential that participants have lots of experience in banding birds – the local biologists are well-versed, and 2 experienced banders from NC will be along. Part of the fee for this excursion will be donated to the local Nicaraguan banders to help support their bird banding research.
