The National Park Service has contracted IBP to collaborate on conducting an avian inventory of North Cascades National Park.
Map of North Cascades National Park, Washington. We began fieldwork during the spring/summer of 2001, when we conducted 640 point counts distributed across the length and breadth of the park. At each survey point we also collected detailed information on vegetation composition and structure. After an additional season of fieldwork in 2002, these data will enable us to map the parkwide distribution and abundance of most of the park's bird species. We will also be able to model the effects of a large suite of habitat variables for predicting the occurence of particular species. This information will aid the park in the formulation of long-term monitoring strategie, and will also be of use to researchers and land managers, in the park and beyond, who need to predict the effects of land management practices on birds.
